Father Kirk's Daily Lenten Reflection
Friday of the 3rd Week of Lent: March 17, 2023
St. Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He is known as the
Apostle to Ireland because he went there as a missionary to
convert the Irish nation to Christianity. But he went there first
against his will, when he was a teenager. When he was 16 he was captured by Irish pirates and taken as a slave. While he was in Ireland as a slave he learned to speak Gaelic (the Irish language) fluently. He escaped from slavery and from Ireland as a result of a dream in which God told him to flee to the east coast of Ireland where there would be a ship waiting to take him to freedom.
Once he was home safe in his native country he converted to Christianity and became a priest. He was eventually ordained a Bishop and was sent back to Ireland as a missionary with the task of converting the Irish people to Christianity. His task was very difficult and extremely dangerous but he succeeded. Eventually Ireland became nearly 100% Catholic.
As we live our lives let us strive to maintain the same missionary zeal as Saint Patrick. Let us strive to always put our best self forward so that others can see Christ in us.
