SMM Boy Scout Troop 342 has (re)scheduled a “whitewater” rafting trip in Jim Thorpe, PA for THIS SATURDAY, May 21
. Due to conflicts several of the adults and scouts cannot make the trip, therefore we are opening up the trip to our SMM community! We already have 16 adults & scouts going but we have reserved 23 spots so the more, the merrier! The scouts going on the trip range in age from 11 to 18 so if you’re in this range you’re welcome to join us!! Please visit this link for more information and registration forms: Contact Bob Rivell or Ed Schiavi if you wish to attend.

The trip is a lot of fun – the Army Corps of Engineers releases water from the Dams which raises the level of the rivers, produces additional rapids and ensures exciting rafting. Each raft holds 4 – 6 rafters. All rafters go through a short training session prior to the trip and guides in kayaks help coach the rafters through the rapids and down the river. All necessary equipment is provided, although it is usually worth it to bring a pair of wool gloves and a wool hat (they will get wet so any other material is useless after they get wet). They can also be bought at the rafting store for about $10 or so.
At the end of the trip they will provide our group with hot dogs, chips and drinks. There is a changing room with hot showers so you can rinse off and get into warm, dry clothes for the trip home.
We are usually finished by mid-afternoon, depending on the weather and the speed of the river. It’s about 2 hours to drive home so we should be back at SMM between 5 and 6 pm. We can call parents / guardians as we get close to returning to SMM.
